Ekrem Imamoglu was born in Akcaabat district of Trabzon province on 4th of June, 1970. He moved to Istanbul together with his parents in 1990, graduated from Istanbul University in Business Administration, also completed a Master of Science degree in Human Resources Management in the same university. During his time as a student, he played football as an amateur and took the board member role at football and basketball clubs, then he started working for the family business for housing and urban planning projects.
In 2009 he decided to enter politics and joined the main opposition, the Republican People's Party (CHP). During local elections in 2014, he was elected Mayor of Beylikduzu district of Istanbul. After a successful office term between the years 2014-2019, the CHP nominated Mr. Imamoglu for Mayor of Istanbul in the local elections of March 31st, 2019. He got the majority of the votes and was elected as Mayor, but following the objections made by the ruling party AKP, the Supreme Board of Elections (YSK) annulled Mr. Imamoglu's mandate on his 18th day as Mayor and ruled to re-run the election for June 23rd, 2019. This time he achieved more votes than March 31st, and was re-elected as Mayor of Istanbul.
